CAUSES

What Causes Bipolar Disorder?

The underlying causes of bipolar disorder are unknown but are believed to include multiple factors, including biology/genetics and environmental influences.

Often, people who develop bipolar disorder have undergone physical changes in their brains. Those who have a first-degree relative with bipolar disorder are more likely to develop the condition.

Other risk factors include going through periods of high stress and abusing drugs or alcohol.

What are the Signs of Bipolar Disorder?

Severely intense emotions called mood episodes characterize bipolar disorder. Bipolar disorder is diagnosed if someone has hypomanic or manic episodes. Patients with bipolar disorder often have depressive episodes in addition to the hypomania or mania.

Manic episodes result when you’re emotions are high, or you feel very elated. During a manic episode, people often engage in high-risk behaviors or think they’re invincible.

You may experience a lot of energy and go days with little sleep. You may talk extremely fast and have animated movements. In some cases, you may be agitated or easily irritated.

During a depressive episode, you may feel sad, worthless, or hopeless. Thoughts of death or suicide may occur.

You’re often drained of energy, even if you sleep 10 hours. You don’t find joy in the things you used to, and you may have difficulty concentrating or remembering things. You may often feel like you’re moving or talking slowly.

How is Bipolar Disorder Treated?

In the case of clearly diagnosed bipolar disorder, medication is typically recommended. In addition to medication, Dr. Singh advises the use of various therapy techniques, drawing from Cognitive Behavioral therapy (CBT) and Dialectical Behavior therapy (DBT)

Depending on the severity of your mood episodes or symptoms, a more restrictive treatment approach may be necessary. In those cases, Dr. Singh may recommend a day program or inpatient hospitalization.

Are There Lifestyle Changes that Improve Bipolar Disorder?

Lifestyle modifications and self-management are necessary with bipolar treatment.

Non-compliance with targeted behavioral changes, not taking prescribed medication, or reluctance to participate in therapy sessions can be common. However, these factors can lead to significant consequences, including relapse and risk-taking behaviors.

Dr. Singh recommends:

  • Avoiding alcohol and recreational drugs
  • Forming and strengthening healthy relationships
  • Creating a schedule and sticking to it
  • Staying healthy with diet, exercise, and sleep
  • Tracking your moods and activities

If you think you may have bipolar disorder or are having difficulty managing these types of symptoms, contact Dr. Singh, a double board-certified child, adolescent, and adult psychiatrist. Call to schedule your appointment or book it online today.
